Dry Eye Treatment
Up to 20% of Australian adults suffer from dry eyes and is more commonly experienced by females. If you are one of them you know the feeling, it’s like something is in your eye when in fact it’s because you don’t have a healthy, stable tear film.
You don’t have to suffer through it as there are many treatment options available at Zacharia Naumann Optometry. Mild symptoms can be treated with therapeutic drops while more chronic conditions require more advanced treatment such as IPL. It’s important to note that chronic dry eyes can damage your vision if left untreated.
Medications, ageing, pregnancy, allergies and some auto immune diseases can lead to lower tear production. Environmental factors such as smoke, wind, heating and air conditioning can cause your tears to evaporate too quickly.
However, the most common cause of dry eyes is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. The result of MGD is a lack of oil in the tears which means they evaporate too quickly causing itchy, scratchy eyes. Sometimes vision can blur as tears help to focus light.
If you have dry or irritated eyes book an assessment with one of our optometrists. We will identify the cause and prescribe the best treatment to give you relief.
Our latest investment in Optima IPL technology means that we can now offer an in-house treatment plan. Adjustable Wavelength M22 Optima IPL is regarded as the leading treatment of MGD and is FDA approved.
How does IPL treatment work?
IPL focusses the correct light pulses (wavelengths of 500-800nm) into the Meibomian glands. This raises the temperature of the affected cells and blood vessels, breaking up the oil blockages in the glands that are preventing the production of healthy, refreshing tears.
IPL offers many benefits if you suffer from Dry Eye Disease including:
Less need for the constant use of eye drops
Improved eye comfort and function
Treatment of the root cause of your chronic dry eyes – MGD
Optima IPL treatment for dry eyes is safe, hygienic and targeted when conducted by an experienced optometrist.
How long does it take?
Four 15 minute treatments are recommended for best results. In some cases regular 6 month treatment may be required as maintenance.
Although every patient is unique, most people experience relief from the symptoms of chronic dry eye disease with IPL treatment.
